Studies have shown that company representatives frequently request the electronic processing of value added tax. Companies subject to VAT should be given the option of submitting their regular VAT returns entirely electronically. The FTA's existing online offering is being expanded in a targeted manner for that purpose. The administrative burden for companies will be reduced significantly as a result.

Since the introduction of the electronic VAT declaration in the FTA SuisseTax portal, around 25 % of companies subject to VAT in Switzerland have already started to use this online service.
The first measure, «Specification of VAT declaration data», was completed in the third quarter of 2017. The result is published in eCH-0217 standard form at www.ech.ch.
The second measure «XML upload» has also been implemented. Now it is possible to upload the VAT- related data directly from the accounting systems to the FTA SuisseTax online VAT returns. Fiduciaries and tax representatives can now apply for deadline extensions for all companies represented in a single procedure. As of the middle of 2018, the FTA SuisseTax portal exceeded the number of 100,000 companies submitting their VAT returns online.
